The Energy Action Network tackles this question each year in its Annual Progress Report, a comprehensive, 36-page dive into the most current data on statewide energy use and emissions. Vermont journalists, legislators, and state departments — not to mention EAN’s 100+ member businesses, utilities, and nonprofits — frequently refer to the report throughout the year. Clear and engaging data visualization keep this report relevant and accessible to all Vermonters, instead of being buried in the desks of the wonkiest energy data folks.
Data visualization was what excited me most when Sarah Wolfe asked me to take on the 2019 report. Sarah and I built the report together, as I transformed her Powerpoint document of clear text and current data into a polished final product that fit with the style of previous years’ reports and had some of its own shiny details, too — including a pull-out summary poster, a clearly delineated annual report section, and over 20 new charts and graphs. In the spirit of good data, I’ll let the visuals speak for themselves.
